The visa begins on the day the application is approved. It cannot be extended, although a holder may be able to switch to another eligible immigration route, such as Skilled Worker, if all requirements are met.

Who can apply?

The GOV.UK overview requires all of the following:

• You are in the UK when you apply
• Your current permission is a Student visa or the older Tier 4 General student visa
• You successfully completed a qualifying UK bachelor’s degree, postgraduate degree or other eligible course
• You studied for the required period in the UK under the relevant student permission
• Your education provider has told the Home Office that you successfully completed the course

You do not need to wait for a graduation ceremony or physical certificate once the provider has reported successful completion. Ask the university when that report has been made; applying before the notification can cause problems.

Why the application date matters

A student cannot simply apply early to preserve the two-year period. The application must follow successful completion and the provider’s report, and it must be submitted before the Student visa expires. If those conditions are only met in 2027, the 18-month period applies.

What can you do on a Graduate visa?

The route is designed to let eligible graduates work, look for work and build UK experience without employer sponsorship at the application stage. It generally permits most employment, self-employment and voluntary work. Restrictions apply, including professional sportsperson activity, and study may be limited where the chosen course would qualify for a Student visa.

The Graduate visa itself does not guarantee a job, salary, employer sponsorship or a later settlement route. Treat the 18 months as a fixed planning window and check the immigration requirements before changing jobs or beginning another course.

Application timing and process

1. Complete the eligible course and confirm that the provider has reported it to the Home Office.
2. Apply online from inside the UK before the Student visa expires.
3. Prove identity through the route given to you, which may involve the UK Immigration: ID Check app or a UKVCAS appointment.
4. Provide the required documents and pay the application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
5. Remain in the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man while awaiting the decision.
6. Check the decision and eVisa details before working, travelling or planning a switch.

If you travel outside that area before a decision, the Graduate application will be withdrawn. GOV.UK currently says a decision usually arrives within eight weeks after the online application, identity proof and documents are completed. Individual cases may take longer.

The general surcharge rules charge one full year plus half a year for a visa lasting 18 months or less but more than one year. The online process tells each applicant what to provide. Core evidence can include:

• The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies reference used for the Student visa
• Evidence needed for identity verification
• A letter approving the application if a government or international scholarship provider paid both tuition and living costs within the previous 12 months

Dependants: important limits

A partner or child generally needs to have been your dependant on the current Student or Tier 4 visa to continue as a Graduate dependant. A child born in the UK during the relevant Student or Graduate period can have a separate route under the published rules. Each dependant applies separately, pays fees and receives permission ending on the same date as the Graduate visa.

The Graduate route is not normally a way to bring a new partner or child from Bangladesh who was not already an eligible Student dependant. Check the current dependant rules and consider whether a later work route offers an eligible family pathway.
