Study in New Zealand
Eight universities, applied learning and research opportunities in a welcoming English-speaking system.
Education system basics
New Zealand has eight universities, alongside institutes of technology and other tertiary providers. Bachelor’s degrees are commonly three years, honours may add a year, master’s programmes vary by structure, and PhD study is research-led. Students apply to the provider and then prepare the appropriate student-visa application after receiving an offer.
How the system works
New Zealand qualifications are organised through a national framework. Universities offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees; institutes and other providers add vocational and applied routes. Admission is institution-specific.
Possibilities for international students
- All eight universities appear in the QS world rankings
- Strong applied learning and close links between study and industry
- English-speaking environment with foundation and pathway options
- International PhD students may access distinctive tuition and research conditions, subject to current rules
Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD admission basics
Bachelor’s
Confirm HSC equivalency, subject prerequisites and English requirements with the provider. Prepare academic records, passport and any programme-specific portfolio or interview. A foundation programme can bridge entry gaps.
Master’s
A relevant recognised bachelor’s degree is normally required. Submit transcripts, CV, statement, references and English evidence; research master’s applicants may also need a proposal and supervisor support.
PhD / research
Prepare a clear research proposal and approach a suitable supervisor or doctoral office. Academic records, thesis/research evidence, CV, references, publications and English evidence are commonly requested. Funding must be planned early.
All 8 New Zealand universities
Ordered by QS World University Rankings 2027 global position. Rankings are a useful comparison signal, but programme fit, accreditation, cost, location, funding and graduate outcomes should drive the final shortlist.
