A Bangladeshi passport holder is not listed in the official regional concession groups described in the July 2026 announcement, so most Bangladeshi higher-education applicants should budget for the new base charge, plus any dependent-applicant charges, health checks, biometrics, insurance and document costs.

Quick answer: what should a Bangladeshi student budget?

The visa fee is only one part of the plan. The Department may require evidence covering travel, up to 12 months of tuition, at least 12 months of living costs and any accompanying family costs. The current financial-capacity instrument specifies AUD 29,710 for a primary applicant’s annual living costs, while Home Affairs also lists an income-evidence alternative of AUD 87,856 for a parent or partner supporting a single applicant, or AUD 102,500 when family members are included. These are visa minimums, not estimates of the full real cost.

What changed on 1 July 2026?

Study Australia states that the primary Student Visa Application Charge rose from AUD 2,000 to AUD 2,500. Limited differential charges continue for eligible passport holders from ASEAN, Pacific countries and Timor-Leste, and for some independent ELICOS and Non-Award applicants. Bangladesh is not in those passport lists.

“From AUD 2,500” is important wording. A family application can have additional applicant charges, and card or payment surcharges may apply. Use the official estimator on the day you are ready to lodge. Do not send a visa fee to a personal bank or mobile-wallet account claiming to be an embassy payment channel.

How to calculate the financial-capacity evidence

If financial evidence is required at lodgement, the calculation can include:

• travel costs for the primary applicant and each accompanying family member;
• up to 12 months of course fees, minus amounts already paid;
• 12 months of living costs for the student and accompanying family;
• school costs for school-age dependants;
• any additional amount required by the applicant’s actual circumstances.

Home Affairs gives AUD 2,000 as the travel-cost guide for an applicant applying outside Australia from a region other than Africa. The legal living-cost benchmark for a primary applicant is AUD 29,710. Add tuition and travel rather than treating AUD 29,710 as the full visa budget.

Simple example for one student

Suppose first-year tuition is AUD 35,000 and the student has already paid AUD 10,000. A simple evidence framework would begin with AUD 25,000 unpaid tuition + AUD 29,710 living-cost benchmark + AUD 2,000 travel guide = AUD 56,710. This example does not include the visa charge, OSHC, medical examination, biometrics, accommodation deposit, exchange-rate movement or personal emergencies.

Acceptable evidence and genuine access to funds

Home Affairs lists deposits with a financial institution, government or financial-institution loans, and scholarships or similar support among possible evidence types. The Department can also assess whether the applicant genuinely has access to the money.

For support from parents or another person, prepare evidence of the relationship, identity, source of funds and previous support where relevant. A sudden large deposit or a one-day balance certificate may not explain how funds were accumulated. Helpful records can include transaction history, salary payments, tax documents, business records, fixed-deposit evidence and loan disbursement papers.

If a loan is used, read the agreement carefully and show how and when the funds become available. A sanction letter with conditions that prevent real access may be weaker than evidence of an eligible, properly arranged disbursement.

Income alternative: what the official page says

Instead of demonstrating the full funds calculation, some applicants can rely on official evidence that a parent or partner earned at least AUD 87,856 in the 12 months before application. If accompanying family members are included, the listed threshold is AUD 102,500.

Home Affairs says this income evidence should be official government documentation, such as a tax assessment issued within the previous 12 months. It does not accept an employer letter or bank statement alone for this specific annual-income route. Bangladesh tax documents must be authentic, consistent and capable of verification.

Genuine Student requirement: facts, not a memorised SOP

The Genuine Student (GS) requirement applies to Student visa applications lodged from 23 March 2024. The online form asks applicants to explain:

1. current circumstances, including family, community, employment and economic ties;
2. why this course and this education provider in Australia were chosen, including an understanding of study and living requirements;
3. how completing the course will benefit the applicant;
4. any other relevant information.

Home Affairs prefers answers in the form rather than a separate GS statement. Each response has a 150-word limit and must be in English. Evidence carries more weight than unsupported claims.

A strong Bangladesh-specific GS evidence map

• Academic continuity: show how the course builds on HSC, Bachelor’s study, work or a defensible career transition;
• Provider research: compare curriculum, teaching, accreditation, location and alternatives—not only rankings;
• Career value: connect skills to realistic roles, sectors and opportunities in Bangladesh or another lawful market;
• Finance: make tuition, sponsor capacity and living plans consistent with the documents;
• History: disclose study gaps, refusals, course changes and travel history accurately.

Future interest in a lawful post-study pathway does not automatically count against an applicant, but studying must be the primary reason for the visa.

Document checklist for a Bangladeshi applicant

• valid passport and consistent identity details;
• Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for the intended course or package;
• OSHC evidence covering the required period;
• academic certificates and transcripts;
• English-language evidence when required;
• GS answers and documents supporting every material claim;
• bank history, tax evidence, loan or scholarship documents where requested;
• sponsor relationship and identity documents;
• employment, business and income records where relevant;
• certified translations for any non-English documents;
• health examination, biometrics and character documents when requested.

Use the official Document Checklist Tool with the country of passport and education provider. Even if the tool does not demand financial or English evidence at lodgement, Home Affairs may request it during processing.

Translations and document quality

Documents that are not in English require translations. Home Affairs says a translator outside Australia should provide their full name, address, telephone number and qualifications; Australian translations should identify the NAATI practitioner. Upload clear, complete scans and retain originals.

Avoid edited bank statements, unverifiable salary papers, copied GS answers or mismatched dates. False or misleading material can cause refusal and longer-term immigration consequences.

Visa work rights are not a funding plan

Most Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session. Students who have started a Master’s by Research or doctoral degree are not subject to that hours limit. Rules differ during scheduled breaks and before a course starts.

Do not use hoped-for part-time earnings as the core proof that tuition and living costs are affordable. Jobs are not guaranteed, actual living costs may exceed the visa minimum and work must not undermine study progress.

A practical pre-lodgement timeline

1. Before accepting an offer: verify CRICOS registration, course fit, total tuition and refund policy.
2. After the offer: meet deposit conditions through an official payment channel and receive the CoE.
3. Six to twelve weeks before lodging: organise fund history, translations, OSHC, English evidence and GS support.
4. Before submission: run the Document Checklist Tool and Visa Pricing Estimator; reconcile every date and amount.
5. After lodging: monitor ImmiAccount, complete biometrics or health steps promptly, and upload requested information by the stated deadline.

Common mistakes to avoid

• budgeting AUD 2,000 instead of the new AUD 2,500 base visa charge;

• submitting only a fresh balance certificate without fund history;
• using an employer letter alone for the annual-income alternative;
